Who: Kabane and Echo
Where: Up a tree
What: Kabane is sleeping in a tree. This warrants a 5:30AM explanation.
Warnings: N/A
Something Kabane had discovered since claiming a room at the inn was that sleeping alone is hard actually.
It didn't used to be. In fact, back in Deer Village, it was much easier for him to sleep alone than with anyone else. Back then, it was much easier to do everything alone. A lot had changed since then. It had been months since he'd slept alone, since he'd grown accustomed to the luxury of being able to roll over and immediately see proof that his friends were alive and well. Being greeted by an empty wall instead left him hollow and aching, unable to soothe the knots twisting in his chest.
Some nights, the only solution he could come up with was to simply leave the room.
He beat a winding path through the midnight cityscape, and eventually, the chill air calmed him down enough to close his eyes and get some rest.
Ten feet up a tree.

Today Echo decided to go out and take a morning walk. She had nothing to be afraid of; anything that might threaten her would get to meet her swords. Out of the same habits from her old job, though, she stayed vigilant anyway. Anything that seemed out of place was going to stand out to her.
So when she noticed the figure lying on a tree, Echo stopped and stared for a few moments. She could have just continued on, but that meant the question that was gnawing at her would likely never be answered.
With a jump or two, she leapt up to the branch and proceeded to stand over him. Echo's stare was unwavering as she waited patiently for something to happen.

Confusion wrinkled his brow as the early morning light came into focus. It took him a second to comprehend what his five senses were telling him, but when it hit, it hit like a brick. He was outside, dangling above ground, with a strange girl in his face.
Kabane blinked. He blinked again.
Then, he shot up, back straight and eyes wide open.
(Hopefully that didn't upset the poor girl's balance.)
"Ah! Um-" What should he even ask first in this situation? "I'm sorry. Is this your tree?"

At first, she shook her head. "No."
She paused for a beat, then continued with her own line of questioning.
"Why were you sleeping here?"
no subject
"Why?" he repeated, stalling while the rest of his brain cranked back into gear after his outdoor nap. His gaze dropped to the ground below. "Oh."
Right. Sleeping in trees wasn't normal for people. It was only normal for his friend Kon.
"I couldn't sleep at the inn. Even after I crawled under the bed, I couldn't get comfortable."
His definition of "comfort" was definitely skewed.

One thing she was used to, however, was things totally confusing her that obviously made sense to other people. It seemed like this was one of those situations.
She hadn't moved at all during her silence, and only did because she began to speak.
"What makes this more comfortable?"
She wasn't really skeptical or judgmental in tone (as much as there was with her relatively flat voice, at least). Echo was just curious.

"I think..." he chewed on his thoughts for a bit, frowning in the direction of the inn, "I don't feel as trapped when I'm outside."
no subject
"I see."
She paused again, but this time it was briefer and more natural.
"I'd think the limitations in the build of a tree and potential height considerations would make it feel more confining, however."
